CHILD SAFETY
HOW TO KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE
Take a careful look at your home to identify the hazards. Then take
an active role in making your home safer. And check for safety
hazards at the homes your child visits. Keep a list of emergency
numbers near each telephone in the house. Learning basic first aid
and CPR can also help. Click on the Child Safety Products box
for product information.
Each year, thousands of children are abducted, but it is important to
remember that most abducted children are returned home safely
because the media tends to focus on stories about children. You can
protect your child by talking to your child about safety.
Encourage your child to talk about things when your're apart.
COMMUNICATE !
Talk about people your child knows. LISTEN!
Talk about your childs likes or dislikes. LEARN!
Make sure your child knows important information like his full name,
address and phone number. Be sure he knows how to use the phone
and call 911 in an emergency. If your child is very young, practice
these calls on a toy phone.
Make sure your child knows what to do when he is lost. Tell your child
to always ask for help from a police officer, a store clerk wearing a
name tag or someone from an information desk at the mall or other
public area.
Teach your child to trust his/her instincts. It is OK to say no if someone
asks him/her to do anything that doesn't feel right. Encourage your
child to talk about an encounter with a person that made him feel
uncomfortable or confused. Don't forget to ask him/her if someone
wants to keep a secret from you.
TAKE STEPS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE:
