Many burglars will spend no longer than 60 seconds to try and break into a
home.  Good locks, windows and doors can prevent someone from breaking in.

If you were locked out of your house, would you still be able to get in?  Maybe
an unlocked window or a hidden key in the mailbox or on top of a window ledge.

LOCKS

Make sure every external door has a sturdy double cylinder dead bolt lock.  
Particularly if the doors contain glass.
All bolts should extend at least 1 inch when locked.
Sliding glass doors can be secured by installing commercially available locks to
prevent the door from being lifted off the track.  Drill a hole through the sliding
glass door and frame and then insert a pin downward so that it cannot be
popped out.
Use double hung windows with key locks.
Instead of hiding a key, give a spare key to a neighbor or someone you trust.

DOORS

All outside doors should be metal or solid wood.
Install a peephole or wide angle viewer.
Use strike plate guards so no one can slide a screwdriver or credit card
between the door frame and bolt.

CHECK THE OUTSIDE

Thieves hate bright lights.  Install motion sensor lights outside.
Keep your yard clean and prune back shrubbery so it doesn't hide doors or
windows.
Clearly display house numbers.
