HOW TO AVOID SCAM ARTISTS
HOME REPAIR SCAMS ARE COSTLY!
Many home repair contractors are honest and hard working, but
a few of them are scam artists who only want to steal your
money.
Look for these warning signs so you do not become the next
victim:
1. Beware of someone who comes to your door, offering cheap
home repair work.
2. Some scam artists will try to "hook" you by offering free home
remodeling advice.
3. Many of them will ask for large cash down payments before
they begin work.
4. Sometimes they will give you a low cost quote, but then raise
the price after work has begun.
5. Some will offer to help you obtain a home loan to help pay
for the cost of repairs, and some even arrange for the money to
be sent directly to them.
PREVENTION TIPS
1. Always beware of strangers who solicit business at your
door.
2. Always ask them for a card with their name and the name of
their business. If they don't have one, send them away.
3. Always ask for written estimates of the work to be done. An
honest contractor will gladly give you an estimate.
4. Make sure the written estimates clearly describe all of the
repairs in detail.
5. Be careful when signing any documents that may use your
home as a guarantee for a loan.
6. Inspect all work to be sure as it is being done to your
satisfaction.
7. Always check out a home contractor before signing any work
to be done by calling your local consumer affairs office.
To verify that a contractor is state licensed, visit
"www.myfloridalicense.com" or call toll free 866-532-1440.
An occupational license should not be construed as a
contractors license or certificate of competency. It is simply a
business tax.
